Starting a new job will have it’s challenges especially when it’s with a new employer.

  • Different Processes – You will encounter different ways of working to what you are used to. Everything from different production processes to new accounting procedures.
  • Outstanding issues and actions – There will be plenty of outstanding query’s to which you don’t have the background knowledge to deliver.
  • Working relationships – You are starting from scratch and don’t know anyone!

As well as getting your head around the above you also need to get on with the day to day.

So, no pressure!!

Help is at hand

Seven Step to help you fast track your settling in period.

  1. KPI’s and Meeting notes – Get your hands on relevant KPI’S and Financial reports for your area of responsibility. Review previous meeting mins for the last few months e.g. Management meeting, H&S, S&OP etc.  This gives you a good understanding of where the business priorities are and how effective fixes have been.
  2. Coal Face – It’s important to spend time with your team at the coal face that are making the product or supplying the service. Do as much of this as possible! You will get a great handle on what the real priorities are.
  3. Cross Functional – Spend time with the cross functional departments. It’s important you build good relationships here and understand what their challenges are and how you can support them eg HR, H&S, Sales, Supply Chain, Marketing, Production etc.
  4. One to Ones – Organise 1 to 1’s with your direct team. Listen to what they have to say and what they consider the priorities and dept./business challenges as well as any concerns they may have.
  5. Communicate to your Team – Be clear with your team on your knowledge gaps and where you need their support.   Ask them to escalate any potential issues before they happen.  It’s worth having them over communicate to start off with.
  6. Relationships and Networks – It’s important to start building effective relationships within your team and cross functionally. This will gain you traction within the business quicker.  Attending team building and outside social events helps speed this process up.  Identify who the influencers are.
  7. Quick Wins – Get some quick wins in. This shows you are listening, delivering and can be relied upon.
