Is getting on the board of directors something that you have ever considered? Whether it’s two or ten years’ time, these roles don’t fall at your feet… So here’s a few pointers that will set you on the right road.
- Decide if its right for you – As a board director you will oversee and govern an organisation. You are accountable to shareholders and responsible to relevant stakeholders – no easy task!! You establish the vision, mission & values and set the strategy. Significant legal responsibility comes with the role.
- Develop your area of expertise – These positions are rare so be prepared to wait. You can use this time develop your own area of expertise. Many boards recruit to fill their own skills gap e.g. Industry knowledge, succession planning, M&A etc
- Get in the right network – You need to be on the front of people’s minds. Target the decision makers and get in their network. Show them that you know challenges and are adept at overcoming them. Get noticed and valued in the network – here are a few pointers that will help.
- Reduce their stress and pain.
- Add value to the relationship by investing time and energy.
- Be seen as a leader who motivates and brings positivity rather than an energy zapper..
- Get experience – There are a number of places you can get experience on boards eg schools, parish council and charities. Not only will this give you exposure to the challenges a board faces, it also gives you an opportunity to make a positive impact on a cause close to your heart.
So, there you have it – easy!
