Labour Control – Top Tips

We are putting together a best practice document for Labour Control that will be full of handy tips.  Not only will it support you on the day to day management of your Labour budget but it will also give You ideas of where to look when carrying out an improvement project.  Here’s a sneak preview of some top tips that can get you started!

Start Ups – For a 6:00 am start, get in to the factory floor for start up with your stop watch.  What is the time when the first unit is produced for each line/area?  How effective are your team at organising this.   Make it a KPI.  Challenge them to improve this eg consider getting skills in early or get support from the previous shift etc

Downtime – Have an escalation system in place for downtime e.g. over 10 mins the shift manager is made aware, over 30 mins the factory manager is made aware etc.  It’s important the person escalating feeds back the corrective actions being implemented!

Prepare for your Peak Periods – Have a plan in place to ensure you are ready for your peak volumes.  This can be a great objective for your management team.  Consider multi skilling beforehand,  secondments with more responsibility, critical equipment availability and spares etc.
